Social Hysteria

Posted by Shane Macaulay on 2017/10/06

Social Hysteria is a Toronto based band. Their beginnings however, were in Leiria, Portugal, as a product of a band that had broken up and that at the time had a very promising future in the Portuguese alternative-rock scene. Social Hysteria founding members George and Alex Lopes are brothers, and came from a very musical family. Their mother Teresa is a Fado singer and has graced many people with her vocal attributes a little throughout the world, and their father Jorge was a drummer for many years. In fact at a certain point in time, their mother, father and uncles formed a band that performed live and even recorded in the late 1970’s and 80’s. It was with little surprise that their children were attracted to the art of making music, and started playing musical instruments as early as 7 years old. In 2001, after six amazing years of playing drums, singing and writing songs for the now extinct band Flower Mind, they dismembered, and George found himself without a band. A band that was once voted one of the top 10 new rock bands in Portugal in 2000 by the music magazine PROMUSICA, and played several major festivals in Portugal with bands and artists such as Bryan Adams (Canada), 10,000 Maniacs (USA), Spin Doctors (USA), Jene Loves Jezebel (UK), Mao Morta (Portugal), SIlence 4 (Portugal), Belle Chase Hotel (Portugal), Quinta do Bill (Portugal), etc... Social Hysteria (at the time under the name Cold September), had immediate success with their self-titled promotional EP, and in 2001 played at the Termometro Unplugged Festival in Porto (Portugal) and appeared on the TV channel ‘SIC Radical’ with a live performance and an interview. George had by then left the drum kit and was now on guitar and vocals, being the only songwriter. From 2005 to 2007, now in Canada, several homemade demos were recorded in the basement studio (under the name Daysleeper) and George’s brother Alex joins the band to play bass and occasional drum duties. They hit the Toronto and Hamilton music scene, and played an acoustic show in 2009 at the Praça Rodrigues Lobo, in Leiria, Portugal. In 2013 drummer Malcolm Obery joined the band. In 2015 they played several shows including the Horseshoe Tavern and the Portugal Day Festival at Earlscourt Park in Toronto with Canadian pop star Shawn Desman, and released their debut commercial EP called “Strange Way of Life”.
